In 1870, James married Miss Emma Jacobs, born in Utah. Austin children: Thomas and Ernest, deceased; George M., James W., Julia V., William S. Emma Jacobs Austin died, 3 Apr 1884.
On 19 Oct 1884, James married Miss Buena Vista Warden, born in Missouri. Austin children: George C., Grover Cleveland, and a child who died in infancy. In Feb 1887, Buena Vista died.
On 8 Oct 1890, James married Miss Margaret Washington, born in Virginia. Children: Sarah L., Alfred W., Thomas G., Nettie C.
