Article Title: The Cullman Banner

Article Date: May 20 1938

Article Description: Women Seize Limelight In Law Enforcemnet

Article Text:

Alaoama now has a woman sheriff-the first and only one of her kind that the state
has ever had.
She is Mrs. W.C. AUSTIN of Wetumpka who on May 3rd was nominated for sheriff of
Elmore County. She will succeed her husband when his term expired next January.
Mrs. AUSTIN received a total of 3,250 votes, a clear majority over three male
opponents. Four years ago her husband only received 2,825.
Mr. and Mrs. AUSTIN were reared together in Elmore County and have prided
themselves on being "partners" in every business venture they have tried. They sold
automobiles, traded mules and ran a mercantile before they got into politics.
This year with the ammendment to allow sheriffs to succeed themselves up for vote,
Mr. AUSTIN had the choice of running for re-election with the hope that the
ammendment would carry, or of backing his wife.
He chose to back "Mother" Mrs. AUSTIN makes no boasts of being a gun-toting deputy
herself. But she has a firm hand and Elmore County voters are certain that the law
will be firmly enforced for the next four years.
