Hi Brenda:

I know we haven't "proved" that Mary Ashmore Walker was the daughter of William and Frances Allen Ashmore (for that we really need the will for either of them), but thought you might like some info on them just in case.

William Ashmore was born in GA, around 1790. According to Preston Reed (don't know who this is, but his notes are referenced often for this family) his father was John Ashmore.

A likely candidate is John b. 1760, son of Frederick of Maryland (lots of info on Frederick and his father Walter online). The following is what I've pieced together for John. Heaven knows, these "factoids" could very well be several John Ashmores that I'm stitching together, but so far this is what I have:

The eldest son of Frederick and Bridget Ashmore, John Ashmore was born in Maryland in 1760, and moved with his family to South Carolina, finally settling in the Quaker settlement of Wrightsboro in Georgia.

John was 16 in 1776 and joined in the fight for Independence and continued in the service until 1881. (How well this went over with his father and others in his Quaker religion can only be guessed.)

In 1785 he received his first of many land grants; this one in Wilkes County, Georgia, which he sold to William Fitzpatrick. His next land grant, also in Wilkes County, came in 1787.

In 1793 his is listed as a member of the Wilkes County Militia. It is around this time that he marries and has his a child, William. It is not known to whom he was wed, but a likely candidate would be a Leverett or a Tucker. In 1802 he is mentioned in Daniel Tucker’s will and the names Leverett and Tucker show up repeatedly in his decendents.

In 1803 he drew in the land lottery and won lots in Greene County. We lose him for a while until 1817 when he is mentioned in his brother William’s will. In 1819 his son William marries Frances Allen in Jasper County, Georgia.

I think he re-married to Rebecca Rayborn in Henry County, Georgia (a new county formed from parts of Jasper County) in 1826.

A year later he drew lucky lots in yet another land lottery for Muscogee County, Georgia, where his brother (or possibly a nephew) Pointon shows up in 1830. John is supposed to have died in Henry County in 1836.

There are many Ashmore's in Henry Co in the first half of the 1800's. From what I can gather William and Frances Allen's family consist of:

Mary (m. Joseph Walker) b. 1820
Thomas T. (m. Eliza) b.1822
Angelina (m. Jeptha Baxter) b.1825
Harris Allen (m. Harriet Lambert) b. 1826
Josephien(?) (male) b. 1828 (living w/Nancy Lambert in 1860)
Nancy (m. William Lambert - children living with Frances Ashmore in 1880 Carroll Co.) b. 1830
William O (m. Mary McRight) b. 1834
H.F. Male b. 1839

William died in Henry County c. 1845.

Frances Allen was the daughter of Harris Allen of VA. Harris Allen's will mentions her and her sibs and his wife, Milly. Milly is believed to be a second wife as there is a considerable gap b/w Harris' older and younger children and Frances (a minor when he dies) opts to live with her sister and brother-in-law.

Harris Allen may be the same Harris Allen mentioned in the will of John Hays as the spouse of Sarah Hays. She, in fact, may be Frances Allen's mother.

An excellent cite on Sarah's family is:

This is a site for the Ruffin family from which Sarah descends. This page lists "Sarah Bridgers marries John Hays" - Sarah Hay's parents. Start there and work back.
