My Grandfather is f rom Spain. He emmigrated in or prior to 1897. He married Francisca Curbelo y Valdez in West Tampa in 1897. I believe they fled Spain together. He died in the early 1940's. She survived him (having been much younger) until 1985. I recently discovered she had hid her name Valdez from us and believe although they had posted bands in Spain there must have been a dramatic break to make them flee. Grandfather had been in prisoned in 1865 for some rebellious activity in Spain, but I am unsure just what. Altough there is a Spanish journal of his, I am currently not in possession of it. They lived in West Tampa and rolled cigars their and belonged to the Cuban community, although not Cuban. My grandmother was called Ponchita by all.
