Hello,

I am new to this list, and new to GenForum. I am descended from Matthew ADAM and my middle name is ADAM in honor of this branch of my family.

Matthew ADAM was a millwright, a landowner and a slave owner. He built the water mill in Aldie, VA which has recently been restored. He built this mill for Col. Charles Fenton Mercer in 1796. Aldie is South of Leesburg and West of Dulles Airport in VA. It is in Loudoun County which is in Northeastern VA. Matthew was among the town's first trustees.

Matthew ADAM married Susannah TRIPLETT of VA on 27 Sept 1803 who (according to family stories) was disinherited by her father, Simon TRIPLETT because of her wedding to Matthew. Susannah was the daughter of Simon & Martha (LANE) TRIPLETT. Matthew & Susannah had three children who lived to maturity: William Francis ADAM (my line) b. 01 Jan 1807 d. 28 April 1866 (both in Loudoun Cnty.) who married Adelaide OSBURN; Martha ADAM b. ca 1810 who married Dr. Wilson J. DRISH, MD and they moved to Greene County, IL; and John Matthew ADAM b. 1811 and d. 1885. Matthew ADAM d. 1825 in Loudoun Cnty., VA.

I have information on most of the descendants of William Francis ADAM and I am willing to share. My info is based on a book called "John M. Adam, a Family History" by my cousin Pattie Rose Trippet, October 1983, Waco, Texas. This book is out of print, but copies are available in several libraries including the LDS Library in Salt Lake City.

William Francis ADAM and Adelaide OSBURN had ten children. I have birth & death dates & who they married for most of these ten children.

Pattie Rose and I are both descended from their third child, John Matthew (Jack) ADAM b. 08 Aug 1838 in Loudoun Cnty. who married Ellen JOHNSON on 29 Dec 1867 in Brazos Cnty., TX. The title of the book by Pattie Rose is named for John Matthew ADAM. John Matthew d. 12 June 1899 in Waco, TX. John Matthew & Ellen had four children. John Matthew (Jack) fought in 32 battles for the Confederacy and laid down his arms during Lee's surrender at Appomattox on 09 April 1865. He was in Company C, 4th Texas, Hood's Brigade.

I am seeking information on the father and additional ancestry in Scotland of Matthew ADAM b. ca 1762 and also any information about his siblings. I am also looking for proof of the family traditions stated
below:

1. Family tradition says that Matthew was the grandson of Rev. John ADAM (ca 1691 - 1763) and his wife Janet CAMPBELL of Craigie. John was a Presbyterian minister. John & Janet had ten children. We think Robert ADAM (1721 - 1792), who was a prominent business man in Alexandria, VA, was (based on family letters) related to our Matthew, perhaps his uncle.

2. Family tradition says that Matthew came to the USA in about 1780 with his brothers John and Robert and with his sister Mary.

I hope someone on this list has information that will help prove these family traditions or provide me with better information.

John Adam FARRIS Albuquerque, NM, USA
